Our History

From a Three-Room Clinic to a Regional Medical Center

Arkansas Methodist Medical Center (AMMC) has been caring for the people of Paragould and Northeast Arkansas since 1949. What began as a three-room clinic has grown into a comprehensive, award-winning hospital serving thousands each year.

Key Milestones in Our Growth

1949: Local physicians Dr. W.A. Pickens, Dr. E.G. Lovelady, and Dr. Ed Moody open a three-room clinic at 14th and Court Streets in Paragould.

1950: The first hospital building opens with 21 beds and a dedicated team of caregivers.

1976: AMMC becomes a full-service hospital, expanding inpatient capacity and surgical services.

1980s–1990s: The hospital adds specialized departments including intensive care, radiology, and women’s health services.

2000s: AMMC broadens outpatient services and opens new clinics and partnerships to serve the growing needs of the region.

Today: As a regional healthcare leader, AMMC offers advanced diagnostics, surgery, rehabilitation, neurology, orthopaedics, women’s care, and more—while remaining rooted in its founding values of community care.
